Reference:
1) Ginestet, Colette de and Pouillon, Catherine, Jacques Villon: Les Estampes et Les Illustrations Catalogue Raisonné, 1979 listed on page 418 - 419, listed as image E.670
2) Daix, Pierre and Boudaille, Georges, “Picasso: The Blue and Rose Periods”, 1967, page 202.
Size: 425 x 650 mms (Image size) ; 582 x 820 mms (Paper size)
Note 1: The artist Jacques Villon made a number of classic works after some of the major artists of his time of which this is an example. In 1922, in straightened circumstances, he was commissioned by the Galerie Bernheim-Jeune to produce a series of colour aquatints after 38 major 19th and 20th century paintings by artists including the Douanier Rousseau, Renoir, Matisse, Picasso, Cezanne, Braque, Dufy, Modigliani, Manet, Bonnard. Laurencin and many others. Those artists who were still alive collaborated and signed the prints which were meant to provide the public with access to works which were not otherwise available (colour photography was not an option for reproducing art in those days). The project took 10 years to fulfil. Many of these prints are highly prized today and some went on to be widely reproduced by the Louvre Museum as photo-etchings.
Note 2: The prototype of this work, Maternite 1901, was a large oil on canvas which was sold in Christies New York in 1988 for the enormous sum of US$24, 750, 000! This is an important work from Picasso’s “Blue Period” which lasted from 1901 - 1904. The subjects of these pictures were, for the most part, beggars, street girls, alcoholics, old and sick people, despairing lovers and mothers and children.
Condition : Bright unfaded colours, stains and abrasions to edges of sheet (not affecting the image), otherwise in good condition.
Provenance: Hand written on the back of the frame was the following : “Achete au Louvre en 1940 / Maternite de Picasso / A Ghislan. “ This work came from a Portuguese collection formed by a Mr Ghislan which, when disposed of, contained a number of the aquatints made by Villon after Picasso from the series discussed above.
